Teaching Philosophy Statement

I believe art plays a major role in the school community as it welcomes individualism.  Visual culture  is a big aspect of the art world. I believe everyone sees things differently and have a different perception of the world.  How we make sense of the world around us is the purpose of art education. The culture of critique in my classroom plays a huge part in providing a warm nurturing environment for students to express their ideas and to promote their identity through their work as a mirror of how they perceive the world.

I expect students to be curious and ask me questions, take their own initiative of their work and reflect on their experiences whether it being negative or positive. I want them to see the desire I have for art and allow them to also experience this feeling when they are making art. Every time they put pencil or paintbrush to paper, mould their first piece of clay, build on their artist knowledge; I want them to consider the feelings and all the steps taken by artists and apply them to their own making process. Through dialogical pedagogy, students grow confidence and evolve their work. I want them to be proud of what they have made after overcoming challenges.

Interaction is a key component in each of my lessons, i.e. participating in demonstrations with me, show and tell with reference to my own practice, showing new skills to their peers and explaining their process.

I encourage critique and discussion where no judgments are made. When students begin to form an opinion of their own work and that of others, they become better at self-assessing, decision making and become self-directors of the work they are making. A sense of ownership is then formed. Critical thinking and reflection provide a doorway for students to become meaning makers. They will possess the ability to go out into the world as critical active citizens.

After each lesson it is important to reflect on the positive and negative aspects of my teaching. For continuous professional development, I am looking forward to undertaking Droichead and trailing all aspects of the new frameworks and to attend a workshop during the year. Droichead is welcomed by me to continue growing as a teacher and learn new ways of teaching from other teachers. Droichead will allow me to see what negative aspects happened in lesson and work to improve them for future lessons.

First year students created a dream catcher to display at their school entrance symbolizing positivity and the importance of wellbeing
