Drawing Workshop

Drawing project featuring a derelict building ruin in Limerick City.

Using mixed media such as pencil, ink, marker and paint the idea was to create layers of drawings to compose a new image.

Playing around with different coloured backgrounds and attempting to capture rich textures of the stone and steel seen on site, resulted in interesting compositions of a forgotten site.

When drawing I focused on line, similar to the process I undertake when painting. I decided to use different colour paper for the background to add an extra layer. The obscure compositions make the viewer have several focal points, their eyes bounce from one part of the drawing to the other with the lines guiding their eye-paths.

Drawing is the fundamental starting point to any project. Whether it is jotting down ideas or sketching, drawing is the core and it can be implemented into a sketchbook using various media. Drawing on site provides the student with a primary source and by drawing into their sketchbooks, they can use the space to their advantage to explore realistic or obscure compositions.
